■About Gion Kobu
In 1665, permits were granted for the operation of chaya teahouses, which originated from mizujaya (roadside establishments serving tea and drinks), in the Gion district for the first time, and more than 100 such establishments were established in six neighborhoods of Gion Shinchi (Kawabatacho, Nakanocho, Bentencho, Nijuikkencho, Tokiwacho, and Higashi-Ishigakicho ). In 1732, Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, granted official government licenses for chaya, and chaya were built in six neighborhoods inside Gion Shinchi, namely Tominagacho, Sueyoshicho, Kiyomotocho, Motoyoshicho, Hashimotocho, and Rinkacho. Thus, Gion Kobu began its existence as a hanamachi, or geiko district. The area around Gion Shimbashi was declared a “Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings ” by the national government in 1976, and in 1999, the City of Kyoto designated the Gionmachi Minamigawa area as a Historical Landscape Preservation and Adjustment District .
