Since ancient times, the existence of the “Oni” has been passed down in various forms in Japan.
From the Heian period (794–1185), the term “Oni” was used to refer to epidemics, which were an invisible form of terror, and it was also believed that a series of disappearances of people in the capital were caused by Onis.
In addition, strange and bizarre phenomena that were evil in nature or beyond understanding were thought to be the work of oni (yokai), such as referring to unknown races (people from other countries) as “Oni.”
What they all have in common is that they are “different from us.”
